Bakers Hectic Holiday Season
Brett Baker is recovering after a hectic few weeks of Summer Schools, Festivals and Concerts. After tutoring on the Swiss National Youth Band course in July alongside tutors Owen Farr, Joseph Coo k,David Morton and Guest Conductor Professor Nicholas Childs. Brett then flew straight onto Thailand to direct the Thailand Low Brass Festival for the second year where at the end of his recital he premiered a new trio by local composer Tontao Chuaiprasit alongside tuba player Kanapos Suantan and Bass trombonist Ho Chun Sheng Laurel. The weekend included rehearsals and recitals from other Rath artists such as Phil Brink and Brett each morning directed the Festival Low Brass Choir.
Back in the UK Brett then Directed the University of Salford Graduation Band to over 12,000 graduates and their families on a week long show of three performances a day at the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays. Then it was a short trip south to lead the Bolsover Brass Band Summer School with colleagues David Thornton and conductor and guest soloist Joseph Cook as well as working with specialist tutors Steve Jones, Mark Wilkinson and Paul Bennett.
Immediately after the end of course concert there was a trip to the International Brass Band Summer School boasting its largest number of trombone players yet hosted at Swansea, where Brett featured with Joseph Cook in an evening recital. After yet another successful week in Wales and a welcome weeks break in Bulgaria, the final trip was to one of the oldest Summer Schools in the country Dartington near Totnes in Devon, where he worked alongside trumpet guru's Paul Archibald and Eric Vloemans. Brett was delighted to play in Alison Balsom's Tuesday night recital where they performed a brand new arrangement by Alison of the thirty five minute long Brahms Horn Trio for Trumpet, Trombone and piano.
Finally the touring was brought to a fitting end where Brett travelled to the other end of the UK and played the world premiere of Jan Van der Roosts Trombone Concerto 'Contrasts' which was commissioned by Brett in a packed concert at the Snape Maltings Festival with the ever impressive Black Dyke Band again conducted by Professor Nicolas Childs.
