Monument – Simon P Holland (Amazon) 2008
By Simon P Holland
This album is a gem. The Trombone playing is absolustley first class! It must be said that Brett Baker has done a huge amount to raise the game of Trombone playing – and this album, backed wonderfully by the Black Dyke Band, shows him off to his full.
The playing is great, and the music is simply stunning – in particular for me the first and last pieces stand out.
The title work 'Monument' is quite breath taking – why the composer isn't better known is a complete mystery – the second movement is a real hair raiser, and the ending? – Wow! This is a fantastic addition, not only to the Trombone repetoire, but also to the Brass Band repetoire. A real Monument! (Mr Owen please write more music for us! I have rarely heard music this inspiring!)
The final piece is 'Earths Fury' again a wonderful piece, very descriptive this is immediateley likeable and again the second movement is stunning.
Whether you are a Trombone fan, or a Brass Band fan – this album is great.
